Klove X Dubai Expo 2020

Inspiration from the alchemical process that produces the crystal formation known as Desert Rose, for our prestigious New Commission for Expo 2020 Dubai. Through the Desert Rose, we will reimagine 3 large suspension formations of light objects that can be placed in different architectural spaces. The Petals of these crystal clusters will be produced in 3 materials – Glass, Metal (klove India) and Clay (Al Ghadeer UAE) – Coming together into one single composite with an internal sub-structure which will also carry the lighting system.

Geometry of Nature, Glow of Design

The essence of the Desert Rose—a naturally occurring gypsum crystal known for its delicate, layered structure and earthy elegance. Drawing from the Middle Eastern desert landscape, it explores organic forms, soft tonal palettes, and metallic textures. The interplay of warm ambient lighting with chrome and glass surfaces sets the tone for a sculptural light installation that feels both grounded and ethereal.

The design began with a deep dive into the Desert Rose crystal’s layered and organic geometry. Through brainstorming and sketching, I explored how to translate its natural form into a modular light structure. Quick studies helped define petal shapes, radial flow, and light interaction—forming the basis for later refinements in material and scale.

Throughout the design process, the chandelier was developed in three distinct segments and sizes to echo the natural variance found in Desert Rose crystal formations. This modular approach allowed for flexibility in scale and arrangement while maintaining visual coherence. Each segment was iterated upon through form studies—exploring petal density, light diffusion, and structural balance—to ensure the final piece felt organic yet intentional. The design evolved from a single core unit into a cascading, multi-dimensional installation, creating a sculptural presence that could adapt to a range of spatial contexts.

“Designing this collection taught me how to distill natural forms into modular elements while preserving emotional impact. The Desert Rose inspired not just the shape—but the experience of light itself.”
